Major Mergers in the Air

Semel_yahoo03The NYT’s Dealbook tracks several big pending mergers:

Microsoft has made a preliminary overture to Internet giant Yahoo, and the two companies are in very early discussions about a possible merger, according to people briefed on the talks, which were first reported Friday in New York Post. Microsoft and Yahoo have considered some kind of combination before, including the sale of a stake in Yahoo’s search business to Microsoft, but failed to come to terms.

The Post says that while the two have held talks on the subject in the past, there is a new urgency on Microsoft’s part, following Google’s $3.5 billion deal to buy DoubleClick, a company that Bill Gates also coveted.

There’s another mediamegadeal in the air. Reuters Group, the world’s largest publicly traded provider of financial data, said it received a takeover approach from an unidentified suitor. The news, which camedays after Dow Jones disclosed an unsolicited $5 billion takeover offer from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, sent Reuters’ shares up 31 percent, giving the London-based company a market capitalization of 7.9 billion pounds ($15.7 billion).
